Vintage Japanese Hakone Yosegi-Zaiku Magic Cigarette Case – Mt. Fuji Inlay

A wonderfully unusual vintage Japanese magic cigarette case featuring traditional Hakone Yosegi-Zaiku woodwork and a detailed Mt. Fuji landscape. The scene is created using the natural colors of different woods, with Mt. Fuji, trees, a traditional house, and surrounding landscape worked into the design. And then there’s the “magic.” A small item is placed inside, the case is closed, and when it’s reopened from the opposite side, the item appears to have vanished. Reverse the process and it reappears — a clever little mechanical trick built right into the case. Likely originally sold as a Japanese souvenir, it still has its original packaging along with the Magic Cigarette Case instruction card and Yosegi-Zaiku information sheet, which explains the traditional woodworking technique and the natural woods used to create the different colors. Age: Mid-century, likely 1950s–1960s. Condition: Excellent vintage condition and seemingly unused, still with its original packaging and paperwork.
